Privacy policy.

al-Firasah (“we”, “us”, “our”) is a long-form video and writing project, and a venture of Masirah, an Oman-based media holding company. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit firasah.io, why we collect it, and the choices you have. Questions? Email contact@firasah.io.
Information you give us
When you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the email address you provide. If you email us, we receive your message and any details you choose to include.
Information collected automatically
To understand our audience and improve what we publish, we record a small amount of information each time a page is viewed:
- A randomly generated visitor ID stored on your device, so repeat visits can be counted without identifying you by name.
- The pages you view on our site and the date and time of the visit.
- The website or link that referred you to us, if any.
- An approximate location (country and city) and coordinates derived from your IP address. We do not store your full IP address ourselves.
This is gathered both by our own analytics and by a shared analytics script provided by our parent, Masirah (loaded from masirah.co), which lets Masirah understand visits across its ventures in one place.
Cookies and local storage
When you first visit, we ask for your consent before setting any analytics cookies. Nothing non-essential runs until you accept — if you decline, no analytics or Google Analytics cookies are set. If you accept, we use Google Analytics and our own first-party analytics to understand how the site is used; these store a visitor ID and a cached approximate location in your browser, used only for the analytics described above. We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. You can clear these at any time through your browser settings (clearing them will bring the consent choice back). Pages that embed YouTube videos may cause Google to set its own cookies when a video loads or plays; that is governed by Google’s privacy policy.
Why we collect it, and our legal basis
We use this information to measure readership, see which pieces resonate, and improve the site. Where the law requires a basis, we rely on your consent for the newsletter, and on our legitimate interest in understanding and improving our audience for basic analytics.
Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers that help us run the site:
- Google Firebase, which hosts our database and stores subscriber and analytics records.
- IP geolocation providers (such as ipapi.co, freeipapi.com, and geolocation-db.com), which translate an IP address into an approximate location.
- Masirah, our parent company, for group-level analytics.
- Google Analytics, which measures site usage (only if you accept cookies).
- Google / YouTube, when video content is embedded.
International transfers
Our providers may process data on servers outside your country, including outside the EEA. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards offered by those providers.
How long we keep it
We keep newsletter subscriptions until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete them. We keep analytics records for as long as they are useful for understanding trends, and remove or aggregate older records periodically.
Your choices and rights
You can unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time, or ask us to show you, correct, or delete the personal information we hold about you. Depending on where you live (for example, the EEA or UK), you may also have the right to object to or restrict certain processing, or to lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. To exercise any of these, email contact@firasah.io and we will respond.
Children
firasah.io is intended for a general adult audience and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “last updated” date above. Significant changes will be made clear on this page.
